Split the bill with Glovo

No hard feelings.

Why we needed this feature?

Splitting the bill with somebody can be one of the most awkward situations.

This project came from a Bootcamp task - we were asked to add a feature to an existing brand. Me and Saskia Everard designed the user experience for splitting bills in Glovo. Here's how we did it in just a week.

Who is Glovo?

Glovo is one of the biggest Spanish courier services that provides purchases and delivering through its mobile app.

How do people find flexibility
when splitting shares?

Firstly, we needed to find what are the current habits and moods among people when they share one bill.

INSIGHTS FROM 2 initial interviews:

we marked what we needed to consider: what are the most popular methods for transferring money, how do people agree on who is paying what, how their banks charge them.

INSIGHTS FROM 8 interviews:

  • Nobody likes to do the math.

  • 6 of 8 claimed they rarely have cash in them.

  • 5 of them use alternative apps (like Revolut) to transfer money.

  • They mostly share bills for restaurants.

  • 4 of them said they prefer to split evenly.

  • Tips and pedantic attitudes can be a vibe killer.

What did a survey tell us?

41.9%
share expenses with friends/ family/ collegues at least once a month.

43.8%
split it evenly between them.

42.9%
share bills more often with a certain group of friends.

Persona 1: Diego

  • Wants to have flexibility when splitting bills.

  • Wants to skip conversations about money.

  • Prefers everyone to pay their part with fewer talks.

Persona 2: Helena

  • Wants to have flexibility when splitting bills.

  • Wants the math to be done for her.

  • Prefers if everyone is clear how they will split before they order.

How might we help people on Glovo split bills
fast and without awkwardness?

Diego and Helena will be our reference when creating the wireframes.

II. Interface.

Let’s jump into their shoes!

Scenario 1: Diego and Helena have a dinner - pizza from Glovo - best deal!

Diego gets to pay the bill and they decide to split it. Both hate wasting time and awkward conversations about money but luckily Glovo has a new feature that puts their minds at rest.

How Diego requests a bill splitting.

SCENARIO 2: Helena accepts the request sent from Diego.

How Helena receives and accept the bill splitting.

How did we come from A to B?

We started with paper sketches (crazy 8's). We had only 3 days to create two user flows, so we prioritized moving to mid-fidelity. In that stage, we did 3 usability tests and one crits session with cohorts from the Bootcamp.

Then we moved to high-fidelity with respect to Glovo's current design. There were plenty of improvements on the go and here are the main ones:

Overview

This project was done quite intensively - in strict organisation and self-discipline. Yet it was quite fun and people recognised it as a useful feature.
We presented it in front of an audience, and the reactions were quite positive.
Here's the presentation.

Have a thought about it? Let's talk :)
